Letter from the Board President and Executive Director:
Over the years, it has been Southern Arizona Legal Aid’s responsibility to ensure that as many people as possible receive access to justice. This task is more daunting now than ever before, as the number of people in need of legal assistance in our service area continues to grow. We recognize the many accomplishments by the dedicated staff and volunteers at SALA.
Despite the economic downturn, we have been able to provide free civil legal aid throughout an expansive 33,000 square mile service area (2010 U.S. Census data) in nine Arizona counties and on eleven Indian reservations. There are more than 407,872 eligible people who live in this area, which is up sharply from the last census report. We have built an organization based on shared values and common goals to improve access to the civil legal system, increase funding for legal aid to the poor, and thereby increase access to justice for low income people across southern and southeastern Arizona.
